Friction and wear behavior of basalt-fabric-reinforced/solid-lubricant-filled phenolic composites

AbstractTo improve the tribological properties of ba-salt-fabric-reinforced phenolic composites, solid lubricantsof MoS2 and graphite were incorporated, and the tribologi-cal properties of the resulting basalt-fabric composites wereinvestigated on a model ring-on-block test rig under drysliding conditions. The effects of the filler content, load, andsliding time on the tribological behavior of the basalt-fabriccomposites were systematically examined. The morpholo-gies of the worn surfaces and transfer films formed on thecounterpart steel rings were analyzed by means of scanningelectron microscopy. The experimental results reveal thatthe incorporation of MoS2 significantly decreased the fric-tion coefficient, whereas the inclusion of graphite improvedthe wear resistance remarkably. The results also indicatethat the filled basalt-fabric composites seemed to be moresuitable for friction materials serving under higher loads.The transfer films formed on the counterpart surfaces dur-ing the friction process made contributions to the reduction of the friction coefficient and wear rate of the basalt-fabric composites.
