AbstractThe results of a study of some factors in the preparation of bismuth-molybdate catalyst for the oxidative dehydrogenation of n-butenes is presented briefly in this paper. Kinetic investigation of the relevant reactions over co-gelled and impregnated catalysts suggests that the conversion of butenes and butadiene could be treated as the first order reactions. The complex reactions occurring in the oxidative dehydrogenation of butenes could be adapted into a framework of a simplified reaction scheme, and the kinetic parameters were evaluated for each step in the framework. The physicochemical and catalytic properties of fresh catalyst were investigated and compared with those of deactivated catalyst from commercial reactor, as well as those of specially treated catalysts from a simulated laboratory run in order to have an insight into the cause of catalyst deactivation. A speculation about the nature of active site and reaction mechanism on the catalyst is proposed.
