AbstractA comparison of corrosion process and mechanism between the plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) coated magnesium alloy and PEO coated magnesium alloy with laser surface melting (LSM-PEO) pretreatment was made based on our previous work. The corrosion tests were carried out using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement in 0.1 M NaCl solution and salt spray tests' in 5 wt% NaCl solution. Results showed that the LSM-PEO coated magnesium alloy could bear a longer time of exposure than the PEO coated one. The PEO coated magnesium alloy underwent severe localized corrosion, while localized corrosion was effectively retarded for the LSM-PEO treatment. The different corrosion processes between the PEO and LSM-PEO treated magnesium alloy can be ascribed to the decrease of defects in the PEO coating and the different roles of the beta-phase in the substrate after LSM treatment.
