Effect of atomic oxygen irradiation on the friction and wear behavior of MoS2-doped phenolic eposy resin-based bonded solid lubricating coatings

AbstractMoS2-doped phenolic epoxy resin based bonded solid lubricating coatings were prepared and irradiated by atomic oxygen ( AO) in a ground based simulation sys tem, aiming at revealing the effects of low earth orbit environment on the friction and wear behavior of the resin based bonded solid lubricating coatings ( RBSLC) . The friction and wear behaviors of the coatings were evaluated using a ball on disc tribometer, while the surface structure and composition of the coati ngs were investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy ( SEM) and X ray photoelectron spectroscopy ( XPS) . I t is found that AO irradiation causes increase in the friction coefficient and decrease in the wear resistance of the resin based bonded solid lubricating coating. By structure and composition analysis, it is revealed that AO irradiation leads to the par tial oxidation of the solid lubrican t and the oxidative degra dation of the phenolic epoxy resin binder s in the coating surface, accompanied by the drastically increased O content and significantly decreased C content. I t is just the changes in structure and compositi on of the coating surface induced by AO irradiation that contributes to the changed friction and wear behavior of the solid lubricating coatings.
