AbstractThree types of micro-dimples with different area densities were produced on the surface of ZTA with a pulsed Nd:YAG laser. The friction properties and wear mechanisms were studied. Results show that a relatively dense micro-dimpled structure is likely to improve the tribological properties of the materials. In a dry environment, textured ZTA surfaces have a lower coefficient of friction than untextured ZTA surfaces. Furthermore, the friction coefficient decreased further when subjected to deionized water lubrication and high sliding speed because of the secondary lubricating effect. The friction coefficient can be reduced to below 0.4 when the density of the micro-dimples is approximately 34%.
