AbstractThe geometrical microstructure together with the chemi-cal composition of the surface governs the wettability of solidsurfaces, which is very important in the study of nanoadhe-sion and nanofriction properties of surfaces. Multiply alky-lated cyclopentane (MAC), a novel hydrocarbon mobile lu-bricant, was deposited on silicon by a dip-coating method. Inorder to investigate the influence of the surface microstruc-tures on the wettability ofMACs, silicon substrates were treatedby different cleaning and etching processes. Measurements ofan atomic force microscope and a contact angle meter indi-cate that the wettabilities of MACs on the hydroxylated siliconand the hydrogenated silicon are better than the wettability onthe cleaned silicon, and that superiority is mainly caused bytopological structure changes of the surface. Furthermore, thenanoadhesion and nanofriction properties were investigated.The different behaviors in adhesion and friction forces are dueto the different surface energies of these silicon substrates.
