Sliding wear behavior of HVOF-sprayed Cr3C2–NiCr/CeO2 composite coatings at elevated temperature up to 800℃

AbstractFour types of Cr3C2–NiCr coatings containingdifferent fractions of CeO2 additive were deposited usinghigh velocity oxy-fuel spraying. Hardness tester, X-raydiffractometer, contact surface profiler, and scanningelectron microscope equipped with energy dispersivespectrometer were employed to characterize the microh-ardness, phase composition, surface roughness, andmicrostructure of as-sprayed coatings. At the same time,the friction and wear behavior of the as-sprayed coatingssliding against Si3N4 ball at room temperature and elevatedtemperature of 400 or 800 C under unlubricated conditionwas evaluated using an oscillating friction and wear tester.The worn surfaces of the composite coatings and Si3N4counterpart balls were analyzed by means of scanningelectron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and three dimen-sional non-contact surface profiler. The friction andwear mechanisms of the coatings with and without CeO2additive were comparatively discussed. Results show thatthe composite coatings doped with CeO2 had betterwear-resistance than that without CeO2, and the coatingcontaining 4 wt% CeO2 showed the best wear-resistantproperty. The improved wear-resistant properties of thecomposite coatings doped with CeO2 were attributed to therefined microstructure and improved mechanical propertiesinduced by CeO2.
